چکیده

Recent evidence of a young progenitor population for many Type-Ia SNe (SNe-Ia) raises the possibility that evolved intermediate-mass progenitor stars may be detected in pre-explosion images. NGC 1316, a radio galaxy in the Fornax cluster, is a prolific producer of SNe-Ia, with four detected since 1980. We analyze Hubble Space Telescope (HST) pre-explosion images of the sites of two of the SNe-Ia that exploded in this galaxy, SN2006dd (a normal Type-Ia) and SN2006mr (likely a subluminous, 1991bglike, SN-Ia). Astrometric positions are obtained from optical and near-IR groundbased images of the events. We find no candidate point sources at either location, and set upper limits on the flux in B, V , and I from any such progenitors. We also estimate the amount of extinction that could be present, based on analysis of the surface-brightness inhomogeneities in the HST images themselves. At the distance of NGC 1316, the limits correspond to absolute magnitudes of ∼ −5.5, −5.4, and −6.0 mag in MB, MV , and MI , respectively. Comparison to stellar evolution models argues against the presence at the SN sites, 3 years prior to the explosion, of normal stars with initial masses & 6M⊙ at the tip of their asymptotic-giant branch (AGB) evolution, young post-AGB stars that had initial masses & 4M⊙, and post-red-giant stars of initial masses & 9M⊙.

Calibrating Type Ia Supernovae Using the Planetary Nebula Luminosity Function I. Initial Results

We report the results of an [O III] 5007 survey for planetary nebulae (PN) in five galaxies that were hosts of well-observed Type Ia supernovae: NGC 524, NGC 1316, NGC 1380, NGC 1448 and NGC 4526. The goals of this survey are to better quantify the zero-point of the maximum magnitude versus decline rate relation for supernovae Type Ia and to validate the insensitivity of Type Ia luminosity to p...

Telescope imaging of the progenitor sites of six nearby core - collapse supernovae

The search for the progenitors of six core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) in archival HST WFPC2 pre-explosion imaging is presented here. These SNe are 1999an, 1999br, 1999ev, 2000ds, 2000ew and 2001B. Post-explosion imaging of the SNe, with the HST ACS/WFC, has been utilised with the technique of differential astrometry to identify the progenitor locations on the pre-explosion imaging. SNe 1999br,...

The Effect of Different Type Ia Supernova Progenitors on Galactic Chemical Evolution

Aims. Our aim is to show how different hypotheses about Type Ia supernova progenitors can affect Galactic chemical evolution. Supernovae Ia, in fact, are believed to be the main producers of Fe and the timescale with which Fe is restored into the interstellar medium depends on the assumed supernova progenitor model. This is a way of selecting the right progenitor model for supernovae Ia, a stil...

A High Intrinsic Peculiarity Rate Among Type Ia Supernovae

We have compiled a sample of 45 Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) discovered by the Lick Observatory Supernova Search (LOSS) and the Beijing Astronomical Observatory Supernova Survey (BAOSS), and determined the rate of spectroscopically peculiar SNe Ia (i.e., SN 1986G-like, SN 1991bg-like, and SN 1991T-like objects) and the luminosity function of SNe Ia. Because of the nature of the two surveys (dist...
